Set in India during the rise of Mahatma Gandhi, Water recounts the story of Chuyia (Kariyawasam), a child bride. When her husband dies suddenly, Chuyia is forced to live in an ashram for Hindu widows, essentially cut off from society. Fortunately, she finds friends in the beautiful Kilyani (Ray) and in the forward-thinking Narayan (Abraham). With their help, Chuyia attempts to escape the confines of her existence. Boasting lush visuals, Water could easily be a bleak story of deprivation and loss, but in Mehta’s gentle hands, it becomes one charged with hope and optimism.

National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150) is a massive one-day celebration of Canadian cinema in honour of our nation’s sesquicentennial. On April 19, 2017, great Canadian movies will be available on air, online and on foot at over 1,700 screenings in cinemas, libraries, public squares and anywhere you can show a film. With free events happening across every province and territory, many involving Canadian film talent, NCFD 150 — a Canada 150 Signature Project — promises to be the largest film festival in the world. Ever.

Presented by REEL CANADA, an organization that has been introducing Canadian film to high school students and new Canadians since 2005, NCFD 150 is a tremendous opportunity for Canadians of all ages and backgrounds to gather and enjoy the wealth of work by our nation’s storytellers. With the help of partners and audiences in every corner of the country — including TIFF’s great Canada On Screen project which will present 150 screenings across the country on the day — NCFD 150 will put Canadian cinema and our unique nation in an unprecedented spotlight.

In celebration of NCFD 150, TIFF’s national screening outreach programme, Film Circuit, will present 150 free screenings of selected Canada on Screen titles across the country at various Film Circuit locations.
